Purpose:<
Throughout history, many people have fought to expand the legal, reproductive, education, economic, and political rights of women and to bring awareness to gender inequality. Moreover, they searched for ways to transform popular perceptions of male/female capabilities into an acceptance of gender equality. The movement culminated with the introduction of the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteeing equality of the sexes. Although the legislation failed, people did not leave the movement feeling defeated. In fact, many went on to pursue campaigns ranging from gender equity, female health, LGBTQ rights, and ending domestic violence. <
<
The generations to follow, including yours, do not know a world of the pre-feminist movement. To us, the world has always allowed women to work, have credit in their name, and practice birth control. But that does not mean that the world is a perfect place. There are still a number of problems including the status of women, body imagery, health, and gender equity that we can identify and offer a strategy for resolving. In doing so, we can carry on the legacy of the women’s liberation movement while becoming aware of contemporary issues concerning women and gender.<
<
In this assignment, you 1) will identify a problem 2) explain the source or roots of that problem, and 3) identify an organization, person, movement, or campaign focused on combating that problem. For example, one might explore the problem with domestic violence in Alabama, what are the causes of domestic violence, and the role of the YWCA in addressing/combating it. You can choose a topic that is close to home or one that deals with your field of study or interests. Anything is fair game!<
<
The following steps will help you complete this action project and construct your paper:<
1. First, identify a problem (Unequal Funding for Female Athletics). Be able to explain it in a couple of paragraphs.<
<
<
You can find some issues in the media, or one that has affected you on an individual or community level. <
<
2. Discuss the roots of the problem. Some questions to consider in this section: What in the past created the problem? Does it stem from political, economic, and/or legal conditions that are evident in the past? How have past gender prescriptions contributed?<
<
3. Identify a solution or a set of solutions. Be creative; think in terms of not just what you could do but is there an organization that targets that issue? Such as, in the case of domestic violence mentioned above, how has the YWCA helped fight violence against women? Or, how has the Rape Crisis Center helped victims of sexual assault in Birmingham?<
<
Guidelines:<
A. Your paper must be 10-15 pages, typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins. Use twelve-font only. <
<
B. Your paper will be graded on strength of thesis (20%); analysis of the three components of the paper as mentioned above (40%); grammar, punctuation, spelling (20%); organization (10%); and citation of sources/works cited page (10%).<
<
C. You must use evidence from reputable sources to defend your thesis. Oral interviews; newspapers; websites from an organization that is relevant to your topic, from universities/colleges, and/or from government agencies are the ONLY acceptable web sources; books; and journal articles are allowed. But, of course, any of the readings from the class are acceptable sources. If you have a source that does not fit within the above stated categories, you may talk to me individually to see if they are appropriate for use.<
<
D. Since you are using more than one source, you must provide citations. Use the format with which you are most familiar (Chicago Style, MLA, etc.) It is up to you what documentation format you choose, just be consistent<
<
E. When you turn in your finished paper, you must include a title page (be creative!) and a final bibliography of sources used in the paper.<
